A symphonic evocation of the challenges and struggles that workers and poor communities were facing during the industrial Revolution in and around Manchester, UK. A work composed for the Manchester Camerata Players.

I tried to evoke the heroic virtues, faith and enthusiasm that any African country’s youth needs to show and live by in order to overcome its still difficult, even often tragic, life conditions.

A symphony as an opposite and antidote to the quite gloomy connotation of the etymology (‘darkness, dark lands’): it is instead meant to be full of hope, light, drive and joy. It’s my modest musical take on a possible positive future for our continent and common civilization.

A heroic confrontation between the implacable and severe order of the old tyrannies and recent totalitarian regimes that have crushed and murdered the people: persecution and eradication of the faithful, secret and open resistance of the people against oppression: the eternal and recurring battle between good and evil - with its heroes, prophets and martyrs.

Grounded in the treasures of our multi-secular tradition and practice but also looking boldly forward to the future, my aim as a composer and founder of this new ensemble, is to contribute in reviving the fruitful relation between Art, Community and Faith. 

This cantata is a testimony to the poor, the rejected and the oppressed. It aims to evoke respectfully their lament, their despair and pain - their call for help amidst the world's triumphant laugh and scorn.

This new oratorio is a musical contribution to worldwide efforts to preserve the splendor of God's work, and to support the rise of a new consciousness about our responsibility towards nature.

Are we not foolish when we pretend to know and explain? And can we not learn some wisdom of life when contemplating the issues, struggles and responses of those we easily call 'fools'?

The CD has been recorded during the Summer of 2018 in Krzysztof Penderecki’s European Music Centre in Lusławice and will be released by DUX label. Dimitri Arnauts' participation as composer to this CD is a short musical portrait for piano and flute:  'Weird Bird'...
